My 'Portable Device' Powers Inbound Marketing
Last week I wrote a blog article on how my husband, Philip Johnson, has transitioned from reading the newspaper everyday to using a RSS reader to get all the latest world news and technology articles related to his Inbound Marketing business. While he was reviewing my article, he noted that I used the term 'cell phone' and reminded me that this was not the correct terminology. He got me thinking "You're right! It is no longer just a 'cellular phone', it's a 'portable device'".
The telephone has changed a lot since it was invented by
Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. In 1946 Western Electric and The Bell System put the car telephone into service. This was built on the radio technology with a handset and calling decoder. This phone had two components, a transmitter and a receiver, both which were mounted in the trunk with a cable to the handset on the dashboard. They were originally installed in taxicabs, police cruisers and ambulances. Over the years technology kept making advances with leaps and bounds. Personal wireless communications made its debut April 3, 1973 with the development
of the ‘portable phone’ by Martin Cooper from Motorola. After another ten years, on September 1, 1983, Motorola made history with the first FCC approved commercial portable phone. In the1980’s the phones were called 'car phones' as they were permanently mounted in automobiles. These phones were not cellular. Their signals were transmitted via a single transmission tower. Then they became 'cellular'. The single, large transmission or broadcast towers were replaced with smaller low powered towers. Technology allowed the transmission from tower to tower. This Analog Technology became known as First Generation or 1G. In the 1990’s, there was Digital Technology (Second Generation or 2G).
Third Generation, or 3G, not only transferred voice data as the 2G did, but other types of data, including emails, information and instant messages (text). And now we have 4G with ever advancing technology.
It's amazing how far 'cellular phone' technology has come. Today we have 'smartphones' with all kinds of applications, such as: Phone, Computers, Internet, Calculator, Games, Media Player, Digital Still Cameras, Digital Video Cameras, Pager, and Personal Navigation.
No wonder they are not called 'phones' anymore. They are called
mobile devices, handheld devices, or portable devices or handheld computers because that's what they are. Not just a telephone.
I had my first cellular phone in the mid to late 1990's when I was working as a technical trainer for a software company and traveling quite often. It was convenient to contact the clients and even my family. My parents never seemed to know where I was and my husband would always say 'Just call her on her cell phone'. There was always a way to contact me via my cellular phone. Then, a few years ago, I started 'texting'. What a great idea! Now I didn't have to call people on the phone or go to the office to send an email when I had something short to say. I could just send them an instant message right from my phone. It was so convenient! But wait, there's more! With 3G, I can go beyond mobile phone calls and texting. Being in business for myself and working with my husband's Inbound Marketing agency on Maui, FatIguana Endeavors, I do not always have an opportunity to be in my office during regular business hours. Being able to use my 'mobile device', I now have nearly all the features of my computer. I can call clients, send text messages and check my three different email accounts or read an RSS feed. Another very important feature of the portable device is being able to access all my social media channels. Frequent engagment using Social Media is an important part of Inbound Marketing. You want to post to your Social Mediaplatforms like Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, and LinkedIn regularly. A portable device allows me to do that. Sometimes, I even post underwater pics from Molokini while I'm still on the boat, my underwater office.
